At the Society’s Annual Meeting on December 6, 1966, a landmark resolution was unanimously adopted: the creation of the Medal of the American Society of the French Legion of Honor. This prestigious distinction would be awarded to individuals whom the Society seeks to recognize with special honor.
As recorded in the minutes of that meeting, the Medal was never intended to be limited to Society members. Instead, an Honors Committee would be established to carefully select recipients who exemplify the highest standards of excellence and service.
The Medal honors individuals whose exceptional humanitarian contributions have made a meaningful impact in the fields of culture, education, the arts, science, and business.
Traditionally, the Medal is presented following the Society’s annual gathering of members and the Board of Directors—continuing a proud legacy of celebrating those whose achievements reflect the mission and enduring values of the Society.
